Buffalo Medicine Books
|
OUR NAME
In the Native American world the concept of "medicine" runs through virtually everything. In the broadest sense it refers to supernatural power, but with a very spiritual element. On a personal level it refers to well being, strength, courage, harmony; with an element of karma and good luck. Traditionally the buffalo was one of the most powerful of "medicine" animals. Gallup, New Mexico is the center of the greatest concentration of Native Americans in the country. Tribes who still speak their own languages, practice their ancient religions, make a living at their traditional arts. Cibola, the name of the fabled cities of gold Coronado sought, is the Zuni word for buffalo. We do not specialize in veterinary books.
OUR AIM
While we can’t avoid being involved in the ongoing race for the hypermodern "stars", we work from the premise that book buyers—even serious collectors-- are readers first and speculators second. In addition to providing fine copies of the latest scarce titles, we would like to help our customers find the one book out of hundreds that provides a superior read, a delight to the senses, an imaginative venture into new territory. To that end we will highlight titles, past and present, we believe are valuable for something more than small printings.
OUR BOOKS
We have dropped the use of VERY FINE since it seems to be a degree of grading that borders on the mythic, but most of the books we sell were either bought new from the publisher, or selectively from the remainder shelves and are unread, "from the press" copies. Apparently only one in a hundred books comes off the press so perfect in every way as to rate Very Fine status these days. We will note any flaw, tear, bump, or other defect. We do not sell books with previous owner’s names, blind stamps or remainder marks. We do not sell any printings of a book after the first with rare exceptions for special books, and these will be clearly noted. The majority of our books are signed by the authors.
OUR GUARANTEE
All our books are returnable in the condition sold, for any reason, forever. We only know one other bookseller who offers a lifetime guarantee, but all of them should.
OUR TERMS
Cash with order plus $8.50 per order for priority mail shipping. Insurance, overseas postage, special handling are extra. Orders can be placed by phone, fax or e-mail. A book will be held up to a week pending payment. This is not an open store so a person is not sitting next to the phone at all hours of the day and night. Please talk to the answering machine. If we need to speak, the phone call ends up being at our expense. We accept checks, money orders, MasterCard and Visa. We consider most of our offerings to already be discounted, to the public as well as the trade. Dealers we actually do reciprocal business with are treated accordingly.
