Tony HillermanWhen southwestern mystery author Tony Hillerman first saw the likenesses of his characters Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn as drawn by Navajo artist Ernest Franklin, he was delighted and said, "His watercolor Leaphorn and my imagined one were virtually identical… Chee was a different matter…Then one day Ernie Bulow showed me a copy of Skinwalkers which Ernie Franklin had illustrated. There was Jim Chee. And as soon as I saw him I recognized him. Of Course. That’s how Chee would have looked." Over the years Hillerman has been very supportive of the illustrated editions produced by Buffalo Medicine Books and Ernest Franklin, and we have published a couple of original works as well.
Buffalo Medicine is currently working on a new collector's edition of Tony Hillerman's first Reservation mystery, The Blessing Way, in cooperation with a new publishing house, Sidewinder Publishing. We will offer 100 signed and numbered copies with Franklin illustrations. The book should be available in early 2007.
