SKELETON MAN

Tony Hillerman's 2004 Leaphorn and Chee novel (next to last) revisits a horrific airline wreck from the Nineteen-Fifties when two airliners crashed over Grand Canyon.  Now, fifty years later, a Hopi man brings a very special diamond to a local trader, not knowing the stone will start a complex, multi-layered manhunt that ends up in the depths of the canyon, where the Hopis have sacred shrines and have gathered salt for generations.

For half a century a crazy man has haunted that part of the canyon, impersonating one of the most terifying of all the Hopi katsinas, Masau, who often appears in the form of a bloody skull.  The usual intersting cast of Hillerman characters gathers in one of the most beautiful places on Earth to play out this amazing drama.
