![]() UNCLE ERNIE’S GUIDE TO OLD TIME RODEO is a true labor of love for both the author and illustrator. Not long ago writer Ernie Bulow, and Navajo artist Ernest Franklin, whose amazing watercolors animate the book, were talking about how rodeo had changed so much over the years and they recounted their favorite “lost” rodeo events; from wild cow milking to hide racing, from the Navajo chicken pull to buffalo riding. So many of the events they considered the heart and soul of the sport—the pure joy and pleasure of it—have been forgotten. The sport of Rodeo is, in many way, bigger than ever—cowboys have made it into the ranks of sports millionaires—touring year around, in all parts of the country. The bull riders alone have at least three circuits and a “finals” of their own. UNCLE ERNIE’S GUIDE TO OLD TIME RODEO is a nostalgic review of the golden age of the sport, from its early beginnings with the Wild West shows until it started to go commercial in the Fifties and Sixties. Special attention is given to the cowgirls who were such an essential part of early rodeo. The book spotlights Indian and Mexican rodeo along with a tribute to the amazing Huntsville prison show. The book is history, but with a helping of humor and really dynamic visual recreations. The 9X11 hardcover has pictorial covers as well as a dust jacket. There are more than thirty (30) color illustrations with accurate detail. There is a glossary of rodeo terms at the end of the text. Price is $14.95 plus $8.50 postage. A limited edition with an original watercolor by Ernest Franklin will be available soon. It will have a special binding, signature page, and slipcase. Price is $250. Art will be by special order--with the rodeo event of buyer's choice. The publisher is also selling the original watercolors. Please call 505-998-8000 |
